Farmer Chris’ Notes 3/17

Well there has been some exciting new explorations into furthering our practice of biodynamic farming. We have been sourcing and procuring the ingredients to start making our own biodynamic preparations. We were able to source the preparations for this year from a larger biodynamic farm in California. The application day starts at sunrise, the preparation is added to water and spun for 1 hour, and from there we tractor sprayed and hand broadcasted it over 15 acres. This has been a new evolution for me besides using the annual biodynamic planting calendar, its a big leap of faith like all farming. For me, this is the next big step in our own local/farm based fertility to help create the balanced food security system of selling and eating local, but also the farms fertility being local as well.

Garlic and fall direct sown onions are sprouting up, spring planted spinach and arugula are under row cover and doing well. Seeding in the greenhouse has been ramping up, and soon will be the second home for the next few months, with the third home, the tractors, with the new 5 acres will be busier than ever.

Permaculture tips of the month will start my next farmers notes. Enjoy the roller coaster spring of sunny, windy, rainy, and snowy  Central Oregon, we sure will be.

A note from Farmer Chris

It has been a nice fall and winter here around the farm. We survived our early cold snap and had our winter preparations in order, thankfully. I have been staying busy in the wood-shop, processing beeswax and honey, cleaning and packaging seed, researching our intended growth and needs, and a little relaxing, too.

So far for 2014, I have been able to get some seed planted and under some row cover. Seed starting has begun and for the first time, this year we will be applying biodynamic preparations for land fertility, and taking another step into going beyond organic. The farm has a lot of new things in the works which will all help in improving the CSA, farmers markets, and the farms community involvement. First off and the most important to me, I am bringing on help in the form of personal, committed volunteers and friends. To start, Benjamin will be coming on full time to help farm the land. In addition, I have Jessica as the market manager and volunteer coordinator; Allison will be managing our CSA Blog, website, and branding; Kelly will manage flower sales and coordinate our farm to table dinners. I have secured an additional 5 acres of irrigated fallow land to expand the row cropping operation.

Now we need you, our customers, to help this farmer and farm blossom into a sustainable pillar of our community and economy!

Wildheart Nature School at JJF

Wildheart Nature Class at Juniper Jungle Farm!

Wildheart Nature Classes are outings that provide adventure and rich learning opportunities for children ages 4 1/2-10. We venture to nature areas within and surrounding Bend, Oregon, allowing participants to experience and study the land they call home. Participants document their experiences in a journal that contains photographs, drawings, and personal creative reflections.

Class Topics Include: Fire-Loving Plants, Cooking Food Over Open Fire, Forest Fires & Wild Animals, and Survival Skills
